Monteverde is a town located in the mountainous area of northwestern Costa Rica. This area is known for the biodiversity of its cloud forests reserve also known as the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. It will astound you with its beauty, bounty, and biodiversity.

One of Costa Rica’s most visited sites, home to one of the rarest habitats on Earth, the cloud forest, and an astounding variety of flora and fauna. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is unique from Costa Rica’s other rainforests, with a constant mist that looks like clouds and gives the forest its name. The high humidity at this spot, 1,600 meters above the ocean, creates the mist and provides a cloud-like cover.

The reserve is a bird-lover’s paradise, with more than 500 species; bring your binoculars for a view of the quetzal, whose green plumage contrasts nicely with its red chest and belly, the blue-throated toucanet and the three-wattled bellbird.

Be on the lookout for pumas, monkeys, ocelots and endangered jaguars, as well as the red-eyed tree frog that serves as a Costa Rican icon. Along with the teeming wildlife, the cloud forest offers 420 orchid species and 200 fern species. If you find the Monteverde cloud forest a little busy, the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is its lesser-known neighbor and offers much the same experience. Similar wildlife species are found here as well, including the spider monkey and sloth.

Arenal

Adventure | Nature | Rain Forest | Relaxation | Volcano | Waterfall

Without a doubt, the most popular and well-recognized of Costa Rica’s volcanoes is Arenal, a symmetrical cone-shaped volcano that dominates the fertile landscape of the National Park. This volcano was the most spectacularly active in Costa Rica. Until recently, it was the country’s most active volcano with an average of 41 eruptions per day. Although the Arenal Volcano is currently in a resting phase. For 30 years hotels in the region touted their views of the lava flows and red hot boulders ejected from the volcano glowing in the darkness. No one can predict when this quiet cycle will end and the glowing red orange cone will once again dominate thenight sky but even when it’s not erupting spectacularly the peak is still an imposing and beautiful sight.

Nearly 75% of the total bird species that have been identified in Costa Rica can be found here, including the resplendent quetzal. Also other creatures as the two and three toed sloths, white-faced capuchin monkeys, coatis, jaguars, deer, and snakes. While you cannot hike up the volcano itself, we recommendhiking through Arenal Volcano National Park with a bilingual naturalist guide in search of old lava flow and wildlife.

Manuel Antonio

Along the central pacific coast in the Puntarenas Province sits a Costa Rican paradise known as Manuel Antonio National Park…

Beach | Rain Forest | Relaxation | Surfing

Along the central pacific coast in the Puntarenas Province sits a Costa Rican paradise known as Manuel Antonio National Park, established on November 15th, 1972. Its land area consists of 682 hectares (7,000 acres) and an additional 55,000 hectares (136,000 acres) of marine park. In 2011, it was named by Forbes as one of the world’s most beautiful parks.
The rich biodiversity of this area, coupled with a wealth of activities make this a destination that offers something for everyone. It’s easy to spend your entire holiday in this area of the country! Manuel Antonio is the premier destination of the Central Pacific region offering a variety of small intimate hotels artistically built into a rainforest hillside between Quepos and the popular Manuel Antonio National Park.

The two main beaches inside the park, Espadilla Beach and Manuel Antonio Beach are about a 30-minute hike from the main entrance of the park. Manuel Antonio beach is best known for its spectacular views, but if you’re looking to beat the crowds, venture a bit further down the main trail to Espadilla Beach. It’s also a great idea to visit the surrounding areas, such as Quepos and Escondida Beach.

  4. Horseback Riding
  5. Kayaking
  6. Nature Walks
  7. Rafting

Escondida Beach is perhaps the less visited by tourists who sometimes crowd this area of the country, which, attracted by the easy visualization of the animals in this small park they live, come to visit the national park. It is a large beach, although rocky, which is reached after a walk among palm trees, mangroves and other autochthonous plants, but that distant perhaps is what makes most people, accommodated in the other beaches, do not go near this area and you can enjoy the most natural environment, the sound of the waves crashing against the shore and the small animals that come out of hiding shyly.

Here, you can find not only good accommodations and hotels, but many wonderful museums, bars, restaurants, shopping centers, colourful markets and a fast paced night life.

San José is the heart of Costa Rica and home to roughly half the country’s 5 million citizens. It’s one of those cities that doesn’t wow you from afar, but once your feet are on the ground it’s easy to appreciate its humble blend of tradition, grit, and culture.

Golfo de Papagayo

Situated in the northwest corner of Guanacaste, the Papagayo Peninsula is a newly developed center of luxury in Costa Rica…

Adventure | Beach | Nightlife | Relaxation | Surfing

Situated in the northwest corner of Guanacaste, the Papagayo Peninsula is a newly developed center of luxury in Costa Rica. This exclusive gated community contains upscale resorts, private residences, a beach club, golf course, and marina.

The little inlets and coves that line the emerald green waters of the Pacific make the views here particularly stunning. Additionally, Papagayo Peninsula and the nearby Bay of Papagayo is less than a 1-hour drive from the Liberia International Airport making it a quick and easy transfer to your hotel and the beach.

Tours and Activities

  1. Boat Tours
  2. Guided Tours
  3. Horseback Riding
  4. Kayaking
  5. Nature Walks
  6. Scuba Diving
  7. Snorkeling
  8. Zip Lines

While many of Guanacaste’s beaches are coveted by surfers, those on the Gulf of Papagayo are protected, making them great for families with children. All of Costa Rica’s beaches are public, but because the Peninsula is gated the beaches here are more secluded. On Culebra Bay, within the Gulf of Papagayo, is the Marina Papagayo, the first and currently only luxury marina in Costa Rica. Built with an environmentally-conscious blueprint, the little marina blends seamlessly with the vibrant bays and inlets of the gulf.

Compared to other parts of Costa Rica, the climate along the North Pacific Coast is typically hot and dry. Home to vast expanses of tropical dry forests that often line the beaches, this area plays host to an array of animals including many species of sea birds and monkeys.

Stretching along the Caribbean Coast, Limon is considered to be one of the most pristine and lush regions of Costa Rica. Roughly 125 miles of shoreline between Nicaragua and Panama boast picturesque white-sand beaches lined with coconut trees for an ultimate tropical paradise. As one of the country’s most geographically diverse regions, Limon features everything from mangrove wetlands to towering mountains. Take in the endless scenic landscapes throughout Limon, which was first “discovered” by Christopher Columbus in 1502. Despite this, Limon remains as one of the least traveled regions in Costa Rica, allowing for exploration of untouched prehistoric rainforests and unmatched beauty compared with the rest of the country.

As the cultural hub of Limon, this capital city is a bustling port town with a unique and vibrant fabric. Mostly residents here have Afro-Caribbean ancestry, so Limon often provides a culture-rich experience without the touristy environment of some other major destinations in Costa Rica. The city is home to several museums and attractions for travelers to visit as well as stunning architecture that is unique to the area. One must-see attraction is Parque Vargas, a beautiful park filled with tropical palm trees, where sloths are often found slowly climbing between branches.
